As a volunteer at the Food and Clothing Cupboard, you will help to prepare and organize the shelter for opening on Saturday morning. Once the Cupboard opens, you will work as a team to meet the needs of the guests that day, offering not only material items but your time and your presence as well. Strike up a conversation with the guests, ask how they are, tell them your name and where you’re from, tell them why you are there. The most rewarding part of the experience is learning from the men and women who visit the Cupboard. We are volunteering with this organization on Saturday, May 3rd from 9:15am-12:30pm. Please arrive at CBSC no later than 8:45am so we can car pool to Old First. After we have finished volunteering, we will head back to CBSC for a light lunch. For more information about the Food and Clothing Cupboard, please see below.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please respond by Friday, April 25th by email at cbsctr@gmail.com.
The Food and Clothing Cupboard is a vibrant ministry of Old First Reformed Church. Run out of the Christian Education building, the Cupboard serves an average of 35-40 men (and a few women) each Saturday morning. The Cupboard seeks to meet the needs of our visitors, offering clothing, underwear, socks, shoes, hygiene products, and food as well as a warm cup of coffee and a snack while waiting. Our goal is to affirm the dignity of each of our visitors, recognizing that dignity is something that has been systematically stripped from them as they face each new day with growing needs and dwindling resources. Though it is a small operation, we believe the Cupboard exists to share hospitality and love with our brothers and sisters in need, recognizing that often those who serve are as much benefited by the experience as those who are served.
